Here�s what could be wrong: Start motors quite often get a but gummed up and don�t retract quick enough and make a noise. If it is an efi (which just about every car has been for a long time) car maybe the car has a bad 02 sensor, if it is a very old car it could be a carburettor car with a carburettor problem.
